Imagine being a surveyor back in those days Haki. They wouldn't have all the fancy equipment they have today. I wonder what sort of equipment they used? I see that he had a dog, I wonder what his dog was called? How old was Charles Douglas when he passed away Haki? If he was born in 1840 and died in 1916.
Hi Haki I like the way you have made an effort to find out more about the man your writing group is named after. Charlie Douglas is a bit of my hero. There is a very good book written about his adventures mapping South Westland called Mr Explorer Douglas. There is a copy at the library if Mum would like to share it with you. Did you know that was just over 100 years ago that he died. He is buried in the Hokitika Cemetery. The Museum had an exhibition to mark the centenary of his death. Charlie Douglas had a number of dogs some of the names they had were: Topsy, Betsy Jane and Eggs! Funny names for dogs eh? I learnt a lot about him when I lived in South Westland. There is a river named after him in the Karangarua. He did not name any landforms after himself. Someone else named the Douglas River. You could find the Douglas River on a map and include it on your post. I like the way you have the facts you have found out in four different text boxes. Maybe you can edit your post so that the writing is easier to read by changing the text colour so it contrast against the colours you have used on your slide. Well done Haki. Mrs H
